K-W-L
K-W-L is a literacy strategy that can be used for any subject, and is done before a topic or text is discussed as a method of measuring students' prior knowledge about a subject and peak interest about the topic that we are about to begin to study.
K-W-L is an acronym:
K stands for "What do you Know?"
W stands for "What do you Want to know?"
L stands for "What have you Learned?"
This is an effective strategy because it allows students to intentionally activate their prior knowledge about a subject and build upon that knowledge while generating relevant questions that are of genuine interest to the students. This strategy begins before the start of a unit, but as the unit progresses, students can generate more questions as they arise.
